Neuromodulators

Botox & Dysport

WHAT IS BOTOX® OR DYSPORT® COSMETIC?

Botox® and Dysport® are neuromodulators approved by Health Canada for cosmetic treatments. Botox® and Dysport® cosmetic treatments aim to enhancing your youthful facial appearance by reducing, eliminating or preventing the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Botox® and Dysport® work by temporarily relaxing the muscle where the product is injected resulting in a smooth appearance.  Botox® my also be used to treat chronic migraine headaches, reduce pain from grinding or clenching your teeth and reduce excessive sweating***.

***Some insurance companies cover the cost of Botox® needed to reduce excessive sweating.

HOW DOES BOTOX® OR DYSPORT® WORK?

Repeated muscle contractions use to make facial expressions can eventually lead to wrinkles and creases on the skin. Overactive muscles or repetitive use of certain facial muscles can result in fine lines and wrinkles. Botox® and Dysport® injections work by helping the muscles stay relaxed, reducing and preventing fine lines and wrinkles. Nurse Kali will administer Botox® or Dysport® to manage the root cause of facial lines and wrinkles. Muscle movement will be temporarily limited in the targeted areas, resulting in a smoother appearance of your skin along with the benefits of preventative ageing.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING MY BOTOX® OR DYSPORT® TREATMENT?

Botox® injections must be administered by a qualified health care practitioner. The procedure begins with an initial consultation where the patient’s concerns and expectations are discussed.

The injections and the amount of Botox® needed are determined by the health care practitioner. After administration, the movement of the muscles in that area are frozen by the toxin. The injections themselves take a few minutes to administer and you could undergo the treatment during your lunch break as usually the appointment lasts for less than 15 minutes. There is no downtime and you can return to work immediately.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER MY TREATMENT?

Once treated with Botox® or Dysport®, the results are visible within 72 hours although it may up to 14 days to see visible significant improvement. The results can last from 3-4 months. Nurse Kali may ask you to follow up to review the response to your neuromodulator injections. You can resume their regular daily activities after treatment, but be sure to avoid strenuous exercise for 12 hours to avoid the migration of injections to an unintended area. Also, do to not press or push on the treatment areas and be sure to remain upright for 4 hours.

HOW LONG WILL BOTOX® OR DYSPORT® LAST?

Depending on the extent of your wrinkles and the areas that need to be treated, you may need to visit three to four times in the first year. The results last between three to six months and lesser injections may be needed thereafter as the muscles adapt to the relaxation effect of the neuromodulator. Since individuals respond differently, nurse Kali is the best person to advise you on the required number of treatments in a year.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF BOTOX® OR DYSPORT®?

Mild bruising and a minor headache are common side effects that resolve within a day or two. In rare instances, one might experience an eyelid or eyebrow droop which also resolve in two to three weeks. Allergic reactions are very rare and uncommon. When a qualified and experienced health care practitioner administers the injections, most other problems listed are not seen.
