Dermal Filler Pre-Treatment Instructions
What do know before your Dermal Filler appointment
-
Do not consume alcoholic beverages for at least 72 hours prior to your dermal filler treatment as alcohol may thin your blood and increase your risk of bruising.
-
If you're prone to cold sores, take an antiviral agent for 2 days prior to and on the day of your dermal filler treatment.
-
Avoid anti-inflammatory and blood thinning medications & supplements 2 weeks before your dermal filler treatment. Medications and supplements such as NSAIDs like Ibuprofen (Advil®), Naproxen (Aleve®), acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin®), vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, St. John’s Wort, Omega 3/Fish Oil, and Turmeric supplements. These all have a blood thinning effect and can increase your risk of bruising and swelling from your dermal filler treatment.
-
Avoid smoking for 3 days before your dermal filler treatment.
-
Some patients find Arnica Montana tablets helpful to take for 3-5 days before and after dermal filler treatment to minimize bruising. Food containing bromelain, such as pineapple, may also help minimize bruising & swelling when consumed for 5-7 days before and after treatment.
-
Discontinue Retinol, topical Vitamin A, and tretinoin at least 3 days before your dermal filler treatment.
-
If you have dense facial hair in the area being treated, shave the day before your dermal filler treatment.
-
Be sure to schedule your dermal filler appointment at least 2 weeks prior to a special event or a vacation. Post treatment bruising and swelling may be visible for 5-7 days after your dermal filler treatment (or longer).
-
You will not be able to have dermal filler treatment for 2-6 weeks before and after certain dental procedures, surgery, or other medical procedure (such as a colonoscopy). Please bring all appointments to the attention of your aesthetic nurse at least 24 hours prior to your dermal filler appointment.
-
If you have had a viral illness, infection (such as a UTI), are taking antibiotics, or have had dental procedures (of any kind) in the previous two weeks you will need to reschedule your dermal filler appointment at least 24 hours in advance.
-
If you have a rash, cold sore or blemish to the area being treated you will need to reschedule your dermal filler appointment at least 24 hours in advance.
-
To avoid the chance of feeling light-headed during your dermal filler treatment, be sure to have a good breakfast (or lunch), including food and drink.
